Appearance:
Darkoda is a tall child for a fifteen year old, already standing at 6'0". He has spiky, black hair, some of the longer bangs reaching down to his neck; his hair is in a specific style, with the four large, long bangs hanging on the sides of his face, in front and behind almost in an X formation. His eyes are golden in colour, and his face still has a bit of a childish look to it, although people have said that he reminds them of a wolf, especially with his toothy grin.Personality:
He has a slightly muscular frame, with light brown skin, which is hidden by a combination of a jersey, long jeans, a black trenchcoat, and black sneakers, with red streaks; he really only wears the school uniform when necessary, preferring to dress more comfortably otherwise. His clothes are also designed to hide that his chest and back are both covered in faded scars, and most notably that his entire right arm has a series of odd, dark blue runic symbols tattooed on.
When people meet Darkoda, it generally only takes a few minutes before one's mind inevitably starts comparing him to a wolf; he has a bit of a dark humor, along with the capability of being very confusing when he doesn't want to give someone a straight forward answer. He is very crafty, always observing things around him, and thinking of ways to manipulate things to give him some amusement, while hiding his intentions behind a toothy grin. He really isn't a mean person though, just a bit childish and easily bored. Darkoda is capable of talking casually to even complete strangers, sometimes when he shouldn't; he couldn't be bothered with formality most of the time, and is prone to leave off any titles that someone would expect him to give.History:
Darkoda will rarely let his real emotions show, always maintaining some form of mask; the few times it fully slips tend to be when he's taking a situation fully seriously. There is always some distance between himself and others, even ones he trusts a bit more than others; no matter how good friends you become with him, he is unwilling to let anyone in too far.
Darkoda looks after himself first and foremost; he is not a person who would be willing to risk his life for someone else, unless he sees a means of personal gain out of it. The only person who he would actually put above his own safety is his guardian, and that's mainly because he owes her.
Darkoda grew in an orphanage, left on the doorsteps as a baby, only a few days old. The orphanage was grossly underfunded and unable to take care of all the children they had, or so they claimed, the kinds of accessories some of the workers had didn't support that, but still, there was a constant risk of starvation. He had learnt quickly how to fight to ensure that he survived the next day, by lying, begging and outright stealing. He knew that the workers punished anyone caught harshly, so he just made sure that he never got caught.Status: Obelisk Blue
When he became eight, Darkoda found out the real story behind the orphanage; it was a training ground, using the abandoned children that no one would miss as child shadow soldiers. The training had began the moment they were capable of understanding their situation by underfeeding them; the point of the exercise was for them to figure out how to steal food without getting caught, and lie and manipulate well enough to keep it that way. Having passed their test with flying colours, Darkoda was drafted into the group of mages, and had the shadow magic quite forcefully infused into his body. He blanked out from the sheer pain at the beginning, and when he woke up, his arm was covered in deep wounds and glowing.
He couldn't even move his right arm without incredible pain for weeks, but that didn't stop the small group of dark mages from training him. They taught him how to properly use the shadow magic, and taught him about the duel monsters game. They especially focused on that, also educating him on the history of the game, along with their goals, which completely disappointed him; just how did they think that they were going to take over the world, even with shadow magic? He never got to see how they were going to pull it off though, since the group managed to get into a miniature war with another group, and got mostly wiped out. For his part, preferring self-preservation over helping people he really didn't like, he chose to leave as soon as things started going bad. Well he tried to anyway, the moment he moved to the shadow realm, he noticed someone else following him. It would have better if he noticed them before they grabbed him, but he would take what he could get. After a short fight, he finally took note of his captor; Corona, one of the heads of the former group, who was the only one with a decent sense of reason. According to her, she also saw the futility of the fight, and simply chose to leave. Darkoda couldn't exactly trust her, but then she didn't kill him, and he really had no choice but to go along with her.
From that point, the two of them set off, moving from their remote location to Japan, sufficiently far away to lose any remaining members of the gang. After some degree of manipulation and outright shadow magic, she managed to take over a small business, while managing to keep him more or less in good health. It honestly surprised Darkoda that she didn't try to kill him yet, instead giving him a crash course in Japanese.
As time passed, Darkoda got a proper grip on the language, and his guardian thought him good enough to send him off on his own; she needed to keep an eye on the other shadow duelists around, and she had the perfect person to send to do just that. After informing Darkoda of his new job, she sent him off to the Duelist Academy, to make sure that the shadow duelists didn't overdo things and cause any major trouble. He questioned whether or not she did it to get even with him for that 'incident' he caused earlier, because she also sealed his powers to make sure that he didn't cause trouble.

Darkoda settled into the branch, gazing at the dark mist all around him. Earlier on, he might have wondered how a tree was growing in the shadow realm, but he was far too used to strange things for it to faze him now, not when he had other issues.Additional Information:
He didn't particularly understand why Corona wanted to watch the other shadow users; who cared what they chose to pull, they would just get themselves killed eventually if they let their power get to their head. He wasn't going to bring that up again though; the last time he did, she kicked him off the wall he was on, then forced him to go anyway, specifically tomorrow. While one would think that at least he would be safe from her wrath there, he knew that if he pushed her, no matter how fun it was to get under her skin, she would find a way to get even, and having time to think up something would only make retribution so much worse.
Suppressing a shudder at the thoughts of what she considered getting even, he moved on to his next concern; he needed a deck to duel with. While he still had that deck he pieced together over the years, it wouldn't do for someone who was supposed to be the in the highest grouping to use any half-baked deck. Corona told him to figure it out on his own, but how was he supposed to get his hands on any cards just like that?
"That's a good question."
He jumped, and promptly fell out of the tree, rolling and standing up, hand on his dagger. When he looked at the tree again, the owner of the voice was gone.
"My, aren't you tense?" Again, the voice came from right next to his ear, but slashing out at the area got him nothing but mist. That was his third problem; that voice he kept hearing periodically. He wasn't sure what it wanted, and if he wasn't well experienced in the shadow realm, he would have thought that he was losing it, but he was fairly certain that the voice belonged to someone. Someone who could read his mind, which made things so much worse.
"You should be worried about what she'll do to you after that stunt you pulled."
Ah yes, that incident. How was he supposed to know that shadow magic would react like that? What happened to those people wasn't entirely his fault.
"You are in so much trouble when she thinks up something to do to you."
"What's the worst that she can pull?"
Darkoda has a bit of an obsession with chocolates; a good means of trying to bribe him is with a good deal of the stuff.
He keeps a knife hidden on him for self-defense, and has enough experience to use it well in a fight.
The markings on his right arm represent the infusion of shadow magic into his body; his arm will always have that pattern to mark that he had experienced the dark magic, even if it's currently been stripped from him.
He can see duel spirits, although he can't see his own yet.
