The weather outside was frightful. But there was no fire so delightful. Only indoor heating. Inside was nice. A little too hot in one Obelisk Student's opinion.
This Obelisk Student was unique in several ways. For one he had faced against Obelisk the Tormentor and defeated it. Second was his mannerisms, possible social disorders as well.
What was worse was that Craig had become even more distant over time. He rarely said a word now. He always had a blank look on his face and an emotionless gaze.
With him was his laptop, duel disk, and several piles of cards, all on a table. There was a cord hooking up the duel disk to the laptop. And Craig just sat there reading the program code for the duel disk on his laptop. He didn't change it in any way, or anything else, he just stared at it.
He didn't seem to be reading it, just staring blankly. Craig moved to close the program open and unplug his duel disk from the USB port. Nothing interested him any more. Nothing made him happy. He felt he understood how that King in that movie his sister made him watch felt.

The warmth of the building added a nice contrast to the cold that blew around outside. Not many were wandering the halls of the main building, though. Probably staying in their dorms or out having fun at the festival that was going on. It didn't matter to the Ra Yellow girl what the other students were doing. It was their own choice what they did today, and the choice of one little brat had left her with snow clinging to her hair. Her ears were burning, her nose was starting to run, and all Jaz wanted was a cup of hot chocolate!
Stalking her way into the warmth of the main building, and hoping that there might be hot chocolate in the dining hall somewhere, Jaz only hesitated in her step at the sight of someone else. She shouldn't have been surprised, but for some reason she stopped and blinked at the boy, wondering what someone was doing sitting around in here instead of their room. What really got her attention was the cards and duel disk sitting on the table. What was he doing? Going through a deck? It didn't seem like he was doing much besides just sitting there, staring at a laptop.
Whatever. Jaz shrugged, padding past the boy and towards the dining hall. It didn't take long to demand track down some hot chocolate. The warm cup felt good against her cold skin, fingers curled between her palm and the styrofoam. A light wisp of steam curled from the brown liquid, signaling just how hot it actually was. No little marshmallows floated on the surface of the hot cocoa. Jaz didn't understand how people could actually like those little white puffballs rolling around in their drink.
She paused in the dining hall, cup just keeping her hands warm currently, mind floating back to the boy she had passed on her way here. Or, more importantly, the things that were with him. The laptop, cards, duel disk, and how they all fit together made her curious. The cards and duel disk were obvious, but the laptop was a different story. Either Jaz hadn't been paying attention during the years of her life and missed out on something, or it wasn't a common thing.
Dammit. This wasn't something she would normally do, but her curiosity about how the three fit together had gotten the better of her, and it wouldn't leave her alone until the question was answered. Growling and mumbling to herself, she grabbed another cup of hot chocolate and went back to where she had seen the boy earlier. The warm drink wouldn't go to waste, even if he had gotten up and moved somewhere else.
He was still there, however, and she didn't waste one second making her way over to him, holding the cup in front of his face so he couldn't help but see it. If he wasn't completely zoning out and oblivious to all around him, that is. "Here."Jaz, being nice for once! This was something for the local headlines.

Craig was still just staring blankly at the computer screen in front of him, another program code open in front of him, though what it was for was a mystery. All that could be understood was that it was a Programmable Logic Computer program. Some kind of control for something.
In fact it was something Craig used to work on as a puzzle, trying to make a program for different types of street lights. Now he just stared at it, reading in in boredom. Why was he feeling burnt out? He would question himself at length about this. He would study and stare at things for long periods of time, trying to find some enjoyment in the study of them. Each attempt was a failure, even in this one that used to get him going.
He took no notice of the Ra girl that had walked past and stared at him on her way to a warm drink. He took no notice of the time, and it wasn't until a Hot Chocolate was put in his face, that he moved. Of course the movement was a flinch and sit back.
A Ra Student. Female. Pushy. Probably squeaky voice. Hair decorations of feathers and beads. A quick analysis from Craig on the girl offering him the drink. He accepted it with a monotone in that low voice of his, "Thank you." He took a silent sip, not even a single slurp. If it burned his mouth, he gave no indication of it.
Back at home he'd drink it often during the cold months. Once or twice a day in fact. Not so here.
But why did this girl bother? Craig saw no logic in it. He hadn't asked for one. He didn't consider himself interesting. Did she need something? What could he give? Was it that she needed to use a computer? Not a chance on that being permitted. Trade for cards? Many of Craig's cards were already in use and not up for trade. The extras he had were already traded for more Machines, and those that couldn't be traded were worthless cards like Skull Servants.
What else was there? A duel? Maybe. It might interest Craig for a short while. Or was she just bored and or curious? Only one way to find out.
"Can I help you?" he asked in that same boring monotone that one would expect of Ben Stein.

Some sort of movement to acknowledge her was what Jaz had expected, and she got that result, just not in a way that had come to her mind. He had flinched. Then again, she didn't give him any prior warning. Oh well. What's done is done. It wasn't her fault that he had been too out of it to notice her approach. She hadn't been trying to hide her footfalls. No sort of apology came from her. Jaz just let him take the cup, curling her fingers back around her own.
To his thanks, she just shrugged. It wasn't like she was doing this as charity. She let the silence settle, trying to think about the best way to phrase what she wanted to ask. Part of her wanted to ignore any common courtesy and blurt out exactly what she wanted to ask. The other part wanted to find a better, more simpler way of stating what was on her mind. Aw, screw it. Jaz wasn;t one for subtlety.
Jaz took a small sip of her own drink, glancing at the laptop. She had been too far away earlier to see exactly what had been pulled up earlier, but now Jaz could see that it was code of some sort. What it was for, she had no idea. Did it relate to Duel Monsters in some way? Was it just something random that meant absolutely nothing? He asked her for her reason for being there before she could ask him what was on the screen.
Again, she shrugged, as if it were a yes or no question. Taking another small sip of the hot chocolate, she decided to finally get the question out and over with. "What's that for?" Jaz nodded in the direction of the laptop. She switched her grip on the Styrofoam cup so it rested only in one hand, the free one dangling at her side while she shifted her weight to one leg. Her eyes glanced at the boy before returning to the laptop on the table.

Craig had waited for the Ra student to say something. He sipped the hot hot chocolate slowly while she pointed to his computer and then asked what it was. He set down the drink and said, "It is a PLC Program. That is a Programmable Logic Controller." PLC and Programmable Logic Computer he said in English, since he didn't know the abbreviation and name in Japanese. He learned it in English so he stated it in English, though the language itself was the algebraic in a way.
"I design one for various applications as a puzzle," he explained. He wasn't going to explain how a PLC was read or written as it would take a while to explain it all. And she didn't ask how it worked, just what it was. So unless she asked how, he wouldn't tell her how.
He wasn't sure what to do now. Should he get back to his work and ignore the Ra girl, or should he just suffer the awkward silence and do nothing with his lap top. He wasn't much of a social person. So instead he just picked up his hot cocoa and took a few more sips of it.
